Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Pacific awarded a $30 million firm-fixed-price contract for the construction of a three megawatt photovoltaic electrical generation system at Naval Support Facility (NSF) Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territories May 7.

The project will also include site preparation, fencing, perimeter lighting and a ground cover system, and system upgrades to the supporting electrical distribution required to interconnect the photovoltaic array with the existing system at NSF Diego Garcia.   

“We’re extremely pleased with the award of this green power project, which will generate up to three megawatts of solar photovoltaic power to support the remote island of Diego Garcia’s electrical power generation while reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” said Cmdr. Dan Muller, Public Works Officer, NSF Diego Garcia. “This greatly improves our on-island energy resilience, contributes to mission assurance, and reduces our energy costs, while meeting the Navy’s mandatory renewable energy and energy security goals. This project is an important step for U.S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia and will help us to accomplish our mission in providing operational services to the Department of Defense and other government entities.” 

The $29,877,000 contract was awarded to Black Construction/MACE International Joint Venture of Harmon, Guam. Work will be performed in Diego Garcia and is scheduled for completion by June 2021.
