Training Support Center (TSC) recognized and honored the dedicated service and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, both past and present, throughout the command and U.S. Navy during a ceremony commemorating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month May 30.
Staff and students, attended the event celebrating and reflecting this year's theme, "Unite Our Mission by Engaging Each Other."
"Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have achieved success in every sector of our country throughout history," said TSC Executive Officer Cmdr. Jason Juergens. "Today we celebrate the significant contributions made in and out of the Navy to help develop and defend the United Sates; often in the face of immense racial and cultural prejudice.”
Currently there are 24,743 Asian American and Pacific Islander Sailors serving in the Navy, including eight admirals, 659 master chief and senior chief petty officers and 318 officers.
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have been serving in the Navy since the early 19th century, struggling against adversity to achieve equality and contributing to a bright future for those who have followed.
Guest speaker, Navy Military Training Instructor Personnel Specialist 1st Class Jennifer Johnston relayed her experiences being a child of an American father and South Korean mother. The guests were drawn to an enlightened speech about customs, beliefs and culture.
“I think it is important to take part and pass along to my child my Korean traditions,” Johnston said. “During my wedding we wore ceremonial dress and we celebrated my daughter’s birthday with a first-100-day-celebration and on her first birthday she wore traditional Korean clothes and took part in a toljabee ceremony. Today I was happy to share my heritage and remind everyone of the differences each one of us offers to make our diverse Navy team stronger.”
