Optometry department staff members at Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay (USNH GB) are recognized as top tier performers by peers. After optical professionals across the globe were assessed, team members were deemed the best of the best three times in 2018, garnering prestigious awards.
Lt. Mark Debano, optician, USNH GB lead the way for his team by earning the Military Health System Allied Health Leadership Excellence Award which recognizes one clinician in the Air Force, Army or Navy who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and skill resulting in noteworthy clinical or administrative accomplishments.
Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Trenton Gilliam, USNH GB, was awarded the Marcia J. Krasicky Navy Clinical Optician of the Year in recognition of exceptional commitment to clinical support and outstanding accomplishments in the field of Opticianry while demonstrating professionalism, dedication and compassion.
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Brandon Minyard, USNH GB, received the Fabricating Optician of the Year as the most deserving Sailor or Soldier who has significantly contributed to the Military Health System Optical Fabrication Enterprise's mission, helping provide the "sight to fight" across the entire Department of Defense enterprise.
Capt. J.C. Nicholson, commanding officer, USNH GB touts the high quality of care provided in this small community based hospital is the same quality care provided in the largest military treatment facilities in the Navy.
“So often our shipmates and their families understandably think of Navy Medicine's larger hospitals and medical centers when they think of high quality healthcare around the fleet,” he said. “The recent recognition of the optometry crew at USNH GB highlights the commitment to those that we serve of world class care, anytime, and especially anywhere...even if that means places as far flung as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”
Nicholson continued by saying, “I am so proud of the optometry team and what they have accomplished.”
U.S. Navy Hospital Guantanamo Bay embraces providing world-class care by maintaining a reputation for sustaining one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any military treatment facility in the Navy. The patient population of approximately 6,000 includes military family members, government civilian employees and their families, special category residents, contractors, foreign nationals and migrants.
