NAVSUP Celebrates National LGBT Pride Month

27 June 2019
NAVSUP Celebrated National LGBT Pride Month June 25.

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) headquarters hosted an LGBT Pride program for its military and civilian personnel on June 25 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

This year's theme was, "LGBT: Past, Present, Future."

Following an introduction by NAVSUP EEO Specialist Lonna Bell, guest speaker Todd Snovel, Executive Director for the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs, led the presentation.

In his work with the commission, Snovel travels the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania providing programs, training, and information to businesses, organizations, and conferences that promote equality for the LGBT community. Additionally he acts as a representative for the various communities he visits, listening to shared and lived experiences to promote better visibility of and respect for the lives of LGBT individuals.

Reflecting on history, Snovel outlined the circumstances surrounding the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which led to the first Pride Parade, Pride Month, and the global event of World Pride being celebrated for the first time this year.

“History is important.” Snovel said, encouraging the LGBT community and society as a whole to reflect on “Where we’ve come from, where we are, and where we are going.”

In closing remarks, NAVSUP Chief of Staff Capt. Tim Daniels presented Snovel with a NAVSUP plaque to thank him for his presentation. Daniels noted that Snovel’s message closely aligns with the diversity vision outlined by the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John M. Richardson, wherein Richardson emphasizes the need to be “actively inclusive, ensuring trust which is the basis for a strong team.”

In a message to the NAVSUP workforce,

Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
