The Navy announced updates to the mobilization deferment policy for Sailors and veterans of other military services who choose to affiliate with the Selected Reserve (SELRES) in NAVADMIN 145/19, July 1.

The message replaces the policy outlined in NAVADMIN 007/07 to provide a period of mobilization deferment to assist veterans in the transition to civilian life and service in the SELRES.

Updates include:

-All Navy veterans and other service veterans including Individual Ready Reserve and Voluntary Training Unit members who affiliate with the Navy Reserve qualify for a one-year deferment from involuntary mobilization, commencing on the SELRES affiliation date.

-All Navy veterans and other service veterans who affiliate within six months (183 days) of release from active duty qualify for a two-year deferment from involuntary mobilization, commencing on the SELRES affiliation date.

-All service members will qualify for only one mobilization deferment, associated with their first Navy Reserve affiliation.

These deferment dates start the day the Sailor or other service veteran joins the Navy Reserve, regardless of previous active duty deployment schedule, duty station, Navy Enlisted Classification codes held or designator.  All direct Navy accessions, upon transitioning to SELRES status following initial training, remain ineligible for deferment.

Sailors may volunteer for a mobilization at any time during the deferment period by contacting their servicing Navy Operational Support Center.
