First Strike Bowling Alley Returns to U.S. Naval Base Guam

Nearly a year after its closing, members of the U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) community eagerly gathered for the grand opening of First Strike Bowling aboard NBG in Santa Rita July 3.

NBG Commanding Officer Capt. Jeffrey Grimes, alongside Bowling Manager Kenneth Clark, cut the ceremonial ribbon to the facility before dozens of bowling alley patrons scurried to enjoy bowling games, the new indoor jungle gym, and the alley’s food and beverage concessions.

NBG resident, Rebekah Campbell, and her children were enthused about the bowling alley’s reopening. She appreciated the easy accessibility to the facility, as well as the new indoor play area.

“My kids were super excited. They spent all day doing a countdown,” she said. “We love to come during the week. It’s something we really enjoy doing as a family.”

First Strike Bowling went out of commission due to damages from Typhoon Mangkhut in September 2018. Since then, the NBG and MWR teams have worked diligently to reopen its doors.

“This is a facility that the base has missed a lot. We’re excited to finally get the bowling alley back open with some new added features, as well,” said MWR Director James Duff. “This facility, primarily, is targeted to our families, as well as our Sailors, to ensure that we provide a well-rounded program and opportunities.”

From active duty military service members and retirees to children and dependents, Grimes was pleased that that bowling alley’s reopening has only added to the broader scope of recreational facilities that set the quality of life for base constituents.

“This facility is the next phase of completing the whole trifecta of what we’re trying to do here,” he said. “The whole MWR team has done a spectacular job. You could tell by the people that are here and the noise that it’s definitely a big hit.”
