The Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Det. Goodfellow announced its 2019 third quarter Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ) and Sailor of the Quarter, July 19.
Selected were Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) (ABH)1st Class Matthew Wantoch as IOQ and Cryptologic Technician (Collection) (CTR) 1st Class Katie A. Pierce as SOQ.
Wantoch serves as the course supervisor in the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Firefighter Apprentice course with the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit. In the last quarter, he personally dedicated 180 hours educating 26 students with a 100 percent graduation rate through the Fire Protection Suppression course, and coordinated the mishap-free execution of 8,689 hours of high-risk instruction to 287 joint service students via 34 instructors under his direct supervision.
“ABH1 Wantoch does an outstanding job as a subject matter expert providing unique insights on advanced firefighting concepts to students,” shared Lt. Cmdr. John Allen, officer in charge of CIWT Det. Goodfellow.
Wantoch also serves as the command sponsor coordinator, assistant command funeral coordinator, department medical liaison, education services officer and First Class Petty Officer Association treasurer.
“It’s a privilege just to be nominated for something I enjoy doing,” stated Wantoch, “Training the future firefighters for all branches of service is already extremely rewarding.”
Pierce serves as the departmental leading petty officer and Navy analysis and reporting instructor. She led 12 instructors and 56 students across 1,794 contact hours of classroom instruction.
“CTR1 Pierce’s commitment to her profession and the Navy set the standard for the detachment,” added Allen.
Throughout this quarter, her Sailors were awarded 15 letters of appreciation, two Master Training Instructor qualifications, two Air Education and Training Command top graduates, 4,064 hours towards United Services Military Apprenticeship Program apprenticeships, and over 25 volunteer hours that assisted in awarding the command the President's Volunteer Service Award.
“I am beyond grateful to be selected,” said Pierce. “It was a tough competition and I am blessed to be able to represent my Sailors.”
Her other duties include assistant command fitness leader, indoctrination program coordinator, public affairs officer, special security representative and First Class Petty Officer Association president.
CIWT Det. Goodfellow is one of two detachments assigned to CIWT. With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
