Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) received accolades from the Commanding Officer of USS Bataan for their efforts to repair the ship’s number 5 ship’s service turbine generator (SSTG).
This is a milestone repair for MARMC – one of the largest intermediate maintenance activity (IMA)-level repairs conducted by the command’s diesel shop. The job itself involved multiple Sailors, mechanics and technical experts from numerous departments throughout the command, led by the Production Department, along with steam propulsion, rigging and lagging shops.
MARMC removed and rigged out the damaged SSTG steam turbine rotor, repaired the trip throttle valve, labyrinth seals and bearings to the upper and lower turbine. Number 5 SSTG underwent a satisfactory operational load test that lasted more than twelve hours on July 19.
USS Bataan’s Commanding Officer Capt. Gregory Leland sent a Bravo Zulu to the MARMC team thanking them and stressing the significant role regional maintenance centers have in maintaining an operationally ready fleet.
“We, as a surface force repair enterprise, need to continue to push IMA-level repairs to Code 900 to rebuild our Sailor’s expertise, to give the operational commanders increased flexibility to more effectively repair ships, and support training and operations to increase the operational availability of our fleet,” Leland said.
According to MARMC’s Diesel Shop Lead Supervisor George Tellefsen, this was one of the most important jobs they have ever done.
“We’re all skilled mechanics, but this was new to some of us,” Tellefsen said. “In our shop, you have diesel mechanics and gas turbine mechanics, and although we’ve worked on steam turbines before, we’ve never done a complete SSTG. We had to use all available resources, but we also used what knowledge we already had from working previous jobs. Everybody bringing their knowledge together was the key.”
“With the right people in the right spots, MARMC can accomplish great things,” added Tellefsen. “We’re mechanics, and mechanics apply what we already know and pick up things as we go to get the job done.”
MARMC had plenty of help onboard the ship, as well. Tellefsen said Bataan’s engineers played a crucial role in getting the job done.
“The crew was very helpful,” Tellefsen said. “The Sailors in the aft plant, the main propulsion assistant, I have to commend their entire team because whenever we needed help, they were there.”
MARMC Diesel Shop Lead Mechanic Schaun Thomas said there is a feeling a pride to know they were able to take on a job this size for the first time. It is a testament to the Diesel Shop’s hard work.
“This is a huge accomplishment and it feels good to know we can go in and take on a job of this size,” said Thomas. “A job like this shows the full capability of MARMC as a maintenance center.”
