In December 2018, Information Systems Technician 1st Class Sha’nae Wilson of the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) was selected as Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC) Junior Sailor of the Year after winning the unit award at JTWC and progressing to the CNMOC-wide competition.
She will be awarded a Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal for this achievement.
"IT1 Wilson has been absolutely exceptional, both on and off duty," said Cmdr. R. Corey Cherrett, commanding officer of JTWC. "She spends her days troubleshooting problems, implementing new programs and equipment layouts, and keeping this command operational. Then she leaves work and volunteers in the community every chance she gets. Her positive attitude is infectious and sets a great example for this team and beyond."
At JTWC, Wilson was instrumental in resolving trouble tickets for a variety of systems, coordinating the upgrade of workstations to Windows 10 while the command maintained 24/7 operational readiness, and in implementing new cybersecurity procedures. She is transferring to the guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) in Rota, Spain.
Wilson, who was recently frocked to petty officer first class after only three years at her first tour, has previously been awarded the American Legion Spirit of Service Award for her dedication to community service. She leads volunteer opportunities with other personnel from JTWC to help the Ronald McDonald House foundation, which provide a “home away from home” for families of sick children requiring extended hospitalization, and Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for people in need. She is also active in coaching for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation youth sports program and works with the Family Tree Project, a private counseling practice that partners with the Hawaii National Guard’s Youth Challenge Academy to provide counseling services to at-risk youth.
JTWC (Task Element 80.7.7.1) is jointly staffed by U.S. Navy and Air Force personnel and falls under the operational control of Commander, Task Group 80.7/Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command via Fleet Weather Center San Diego (Task Unit 80.7.7). U.S. Air Force personnel are administratively assigned to the 17th Operational Weather Squadron, a subordinate squadron of the 1st Weather Group and the 557th Weather Wing.
JTWC provides tropical cyclone reconnaissance, forecast, warning and decision support services for operational advantage to U.S. government agencies operating in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Navy personnel at JTWC also provide tsunami advisory information and recommendations to shore installations and units, as well as impact forecasts for U.S. Pacific Fleet’s airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and decision support services to U.S. Pacific Command and its subordinate commands.
