Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes awarded its selections of Senior Civilian of the Year (SCOY) and Junior Civilian of the Year (JCOY) for 2018, Jan. 24.
Receiving plaques from TSC Commanding Officer Capt. David Dwyer were SCOY Thaddeus Marion and JCOY Jose Martinez.
"Our civilian teammates play a significant role in the success of TSC Great Lakes," Dwyer said. "It is always an honor and pleasure to recognize stellar performers such as Thad Marion and Jose Martinez. Their initiative and continued professional support is invaluable to the command. Their efforts, along with all of our civilian workforce, enables TSC to successfully execute our mission in the management, training and development of our 21st Century Sailors."
TSC Administrative Officer Marion’s outstanding initiative, motivation, and "one-team, one-fight" mentality contributed to the success of the administrative office. As the driving force behind all administrative functions of the command, he ensured all command pay/personnel administrator actions were completed in a timely manner, and all correspondence and directives were prepared, up-to-date, and ready for signature. His attention to detail and personal initiative led to an increase in efficiency within the office. His knowledge and dedication significantly enhanced the administrative processes, contributing to the success of the administrative department in meeting critical deadlines.
"Receiving this award and being recognized for the work being done is definitely an honor; it feels good to know that we are making an impact," Marion said. "Whatever I am working on, I want to ensure our workforce receives what is required to make their work easier. I’m also happy to have my team that shows enthusiasm every day. Whether big or small, everyone's role contributes to the mission's overall success."
While serving as training technician, Martinez’s efforts ensured thousands of weekly Corporate Enterprise and Training Activity Resource System entries were reviewed for timeliness and accuracy, ensuring the command maintained an on-time entry rate of over 99 percent for five supported learning sites (LSs). Additionally, as the command’s quota management clerk, he processed more than 1,900 training reservation requests, requiring coordination with multiple fleets, and multiple LSs, ensuring unfilled specialized skills training quotas were filled. His ability to effectively communicate and rapidly address essential short-fused training requests and vital requirements were key to the command’s mission of preparing Sailors for service in the fleet.
“John F. Kennedy once said … ‘I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I served in the United States Navy,’" Martinez said. “Being nominated among all these great and outstanding people is absolutely an honor. My goals are to continue what I'm doing and keep getting better and better.”
