SAN DIEGO  - Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW) presented Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) with an award pennant signifying excellence during a ceremony January 30.

Commander, CNRSW Rear Adm. Yancy Lindsey presented NBSD with the 2019 CNIC Excellence Award flag pennant on behalf of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). NBSD was selected by CNIC as the 2019 first place winner for large installations. Other installations recognized by CNIC in the large and small categories include:

Large Category

2nd Place:  NAS Jacksonville
3rd Place:  JB Pearl Harbor/Hickam

Small Category

1st Place:  NAS FT Worth JRB
2nd Place:  Camp Lemonnier Djibouti
3rd Place:  NSF Diego Garcia

NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Roy Love accepted the pennant during an all-hands awards ceremony.

The CNIC Excellence Award recognizes the top three large and top three small installations and is judged on their performance consistent with their strategic goals and the Office of the Secretary of Defense criteria for the Department of Defense (DoD) wide Commander-in-Chief Installation Excellence Awards.

In a message addressed to NBSD personnel, Love stated, “We set this goal for ourselves this year, and you exceeded all expectations. I am proud of you, and extremely grateful to be a part of this great team!  Thank you for continuing to serve the fleet with excellence, always,” he wrote.

NBSD will go on to represent the Navy in competition with other military branches in the DoD Commander-in-Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence, which recognizes a base’s ability to function efficiently and effectively and compares it at a DoD level.

“A single nominee was selected to compete for the Commander-in-Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence,” said Vice Adm. Mary M. Jackson, commander, CNIC.  “I am proud to announce this year’s selection of Naval Base San Diego to represent the Navy for this prestigious honor.  Congratulations to CAPT Love and the NAVBASE San Diego team for your exemplary efforts on behalf of our men and women in uniform and their families,” said Jackson

During the awards ceremony, Lindsey joined CNIC in congratulating NBSD on the award and representing the Navy at the next level of competition.

“What a tremendous achievement and it’s well-deserved and something that hopefully each and every one of you are very proud of because you all played a roll allowing the base to perform at that level across the entire Navy,” said Lindsey. “Not only are you number one in the Navy, but now you represent the Navy at the next level at the Commander-in-Chief Installation Excellence Award.”

NBSD is homeport to more than 50 ships and about 200 shore commands and serves the fleet, fighter and their families.  As one of the largest Navy installations on the West Coast, NBSD serves approximately 50,000 people a day including active, reserve and retired military personnel, civilian government employees and contractors.  Often referred to as 32nd St., the base is divided into three sectors that include the wet-side, dry-side and the Navy Exchange complex.  The NBSD commanding officer also oversees the bases that are home to Naval Medical Center San Diego, CNRSW and Navy Facilities Engineering Command Southwest, Admiral Baker Golf Course and Murphy Canyon housing and child care facilities.
