Over 1,360 recruits at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes participated in their Pass-In-Review (PIR) becoming basically trained Sailors Feb. 8.

Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes Commanding Officer Capt. David Dwyer spoke to the recruits about what lies ahead in their Navy career sharing his experience when he joined.

"On 7 August 1984, over 34 years ago, I went to boot camp here in Great Lakes and first put on the uniform of an enlisted Sailor in the Navy,” Dwyer said. “Like you, I raised my right hand, took the oath, and made the choice to enter the profession of arms and of service to our great nation. To date, each of you has selflessly answered the call to duty, to serve a cause greater than yourselves.”

Dwyer served as the reviewing officer for the ceremony and presented awards to the top Sailors during the PIR.

Following the ceremony Dwyer met individually with six Sailors who earned awards and their families to congratulate them on their accomplishments and remind them to never forget the lessons learned during boot camp.

"Not as a Navy Captain, but as a fellow American and your shipmate, I would like to be the first to say to you all, thank you for your service,” he said.  “I can tell you from experience that you are about to embark on one of the most challenging adventures of your life.  But I can also tell you that if you serve with honor, take care of yourself and fellow shipmates, and strive for excellence in everything you do, the challenges you face will be very rewarding.”
