Twenty-seven students graduated from the Network Security Vulnerability Technician (NSVT) course offered by Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego, Feb. 26.

The schoolhouse held both day and evening classes to accommodate the fleet’s need for high levels of throughput while allowing Sailors the flexibility to attend either offering.

"The Network Security Vulnerability Technician course is a pivotal building block for our Sailors in order to meet the ever changing demand on the war for cyber security,” shared Information Systems Technician (Subsurface) 1st Class Keith Bates, who instructs the course at IWTC San Diego. “NSVT provides ample instruction to include hands on training that either helps fleet returnees by providing them the refresher training needed to go back to the ship, or our junior Sailors the ability to go to the ship and be able to provide that forceful watch team back up to their command. This is an absolute must have course for any Sailor that is taking part in the Navy's Cyber Security Work Force Program.”

NSVT is an unclassified course designed to teach students how to protect computer networks and systems with a focus in the following areas: security management of routers, firewall and switch configurations, intrusion detection and prevention, access control, user management, host intrusion prevention, host based security systems, and vulnerability scanning and assessments. Graduates will be trained to perform NSVT duties at the master-level onboard ships and shore facilities.

"The Network Security Vulnerability Technician course has been hands down, the most informative course to date in my naval career,” commented Information Systems Technician 1st Class Brian Deosaran, a graduate of the course. “The course's scope, combined with the instructors' willingness to teach, has given me the confidence to return to the fleet more informed, and better prepared to assume the role of an information system security manager."

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
