NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Norfolk hosted the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Operations) Alaleh Jenkins February 21 to discuss Navy warehouse and inventory support provided by the command.
According to NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Supply Management Department Director Cynthia Brown, Jenkins was joined by Special Assistant for Audit Readiness, Office of Assistant Secretary of the Navy Rear Adm. Doug Noble for the tour that included meeting with Commanding Officer Capt. Jim Lowther and senior leadership. The visit was highlighted by a visit to Regional Supply Office (RSO) Norfolk for a review of the receipt, issue and inventory spot check processes.
“This was designed to help her have a clearer understanding of our processes,” said Brown. As feedback is provided from independent auditors she wanted to be able to relate the findings to our actual processes and the way we manage our material.”
Brown added that the walk-through at RSO Norfolk showed the complexity associated with managing repairable parts at a warehouse supporting a repair facility. What seems like a simple process of ordering, receiving and issuing parts is made more complex by a variety of factors including the original part carcass, how parts are tracked when they’ve been received by RSO and are in the process of being delivered to the customer and the constant activity of an air station.
“You have to walk the deck to appreciate that,” Brown added.
The visit also gave Jenkins the chance to see pack up kits that aviation detachments deploy with. PUKs allow the squadron to have critical parts unique to their aircraft on hand while deployed which greatly increases their mission readiness and had been cited as a best practice by the Inventory Operations Center.
Brown lauded Regional Supply Officer Norfolk Lt. Cmdr. John Sumner and the warehouse team at RSO Norfolk for their efforts in explaining their business practices to Jenkins.
