TSC Great Lakes Hosts Regional Petty Officers Association Record Review Event

Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes hosted a regional record review event sponsored by the Great Lakes Area Petty Officers Association (GLPOA) March 27.

Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes hosted a regional record review event sponsored by the Great Lakes Area Petty Officers Association (GLPOA) March 27.

The multi-session event brought together a number of master chiefs to assist 1st class petty officers from area commands putting together their packages for the advancement board.

“We want the candidates to know that we are rooting for them as they strive for success in their Navy career," said TSC Command Master Chief Randall Reid. "It is always great when you’re going up for advancement to have someone look at your record. It is extremely beneficial to have master chiefs here who have sat on these promotion boards answering questions and looking at their record to make sure it is complete.”

A panel discussion and question and answer period was held before participants split into groups to have their records reviewed and suggestions were made to improve individual candidate’s submissions by senior enlisted.

“The Great Lakes Area Petty Officers Association is excited to put this program together,” said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class William Overton, instructor at Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit Great Lakes and president of the GLPOA. “Asking the master chiefs if they would like to participate was a very easy ask. They were eager to volunteer to share their knowledge with the participants. All of them have been on advancement boards which gives the 1st class petty officers an outstanding chance to seek guidance.”

Gas Turbine Systems Technician Mechanical 1st Class Karl Sliver, II, Navy Military Training Instructor at TSC Great Lakes, was impressed on how informative the event was.

“I liked having the chance to sit down with the master chiefs to go over what I need to know and do in order to make my chief’s package the best it can be,” Sliver said “If you haven’t kept up with your information or if this is the first time going up for chief it can be a hard task. They went through a couple of things that help greatly. Especially, since they have been on boards in the past, they were able to alert me to what they are looking for, key things that I needed to make sure I had in my record and different items to put into the letter to the board.”
