The Navy Region Southwest Reserve Component Command Diversity Committee hosted a Vietnam War Veterans Day remembrance ceremony at the "A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military" memorial in San Diego, March 29.

The Navy Region Southwest Reserve Component Command Diversity Committee hosted a Vietnam War Veterans Day remembrance ceremony at the “A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military” memorial in San Diego, March 29.

Bob Hope, a legendary movie and television comedian and entertainer, performed in hundreds of United Service Organization events since 1941, entertaining U.S. military audiences in theaters of conflict, from World War II to the Gulf War.

During the ceremony, Yeoman 1st Class Richard Hudson, delivered a heart-felt speech, acknowledging the service and sacrifices of Vietnam War veterans.

"This ceremony served as an opportunity to gives thanks to those who served during the Vietnam War,” said Hudson. “We are reminded today, as well as every day when we recite our Sailor’s Creed.  ‘I represent that fighting of the Navy and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world’.”

The Veterans Affairs Department estimates that we are losing more than 500 veterans per day who served during the Vietnam War years.

“I appreciate the time and effort each Sailor put in to make this remembrance ceremony a success,” said NAVREG SW RCC Commander, Capt. Paul Gilmartin. "We will not forget those who made such significant contributions to numerous technological advances during the Vietnam War.”

“Also, it is important to provide our Sailors opportunities to learn and recognize significant events in our military history. I’m humbled to witness such remarkable ceremonies like this,” added Gilmartin.

On March 28, 2017, President Donald J. Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This act officially recognizes March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
