Two Department of the Navy resident experts received prominent awards in recognition of their contributions to science, technology and the Department of Defense.

Steven S. Kim, assigned to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, Md., and Dr. Lisa Drake, assigned to U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Key West, Fla., received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service and the George Washington University Arthur S. Flemming Award, respectively.

Nationally and internationally recognized as a U.S. expert in biological agent countermeasures, Kim was awarded the medal June 7 for his distinctive accomplishments from October 2006 to August 2016.

Kim's work conducting exploitations of improvised explosive devices enhanced the understanding of the threat posed to U.S. warfighters along with fostering collaboration with our national, joint and international partners to fully depict the most recent threats to not only U.S. military forces but also those of our allies.

The Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service is the second highest award granted to career civilian employees by the Secretary of Defense and is reserved for Department of Defense and other government agencies' employees who have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service of major significance to the DoD.

The other award recipient, Dr. Lisa Drake, was bestowed the Arthur S. Flemming Award June 4 during a formal ceremony at the George Washington University campus. A key leader in the government's response to bioinvasions in the ballast water of naval ships, Dr. Drake led the effort to publish the "Generic Protocol of the Verification of Ballast Water Treatment Technology," which was developed as the standard for U.S. testing and became the de facto global standard. Dr. Drake is a U.S. delegate to the International Maritime Organization and is a contributor to the International Standards Organization's method for shipboard sampling.

Established by the Downtown Jaycees in 1948, the Flemming Awards honor outstanding federal employees with three to 15 years of federal service for their exceptional contributions to the federal government. Recipients were nominated by their federal agencies and then selected from a pool of nominees through a competitive judging process. Awardees were selected based on their work performance and factors such as leadership, contributions to society and potential for continued excellence.

Both Mr. Kim's and Dr. Drake's distinguished accomplishments have reflected great credit upon themselves, the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense.
