SWOSU Great Lakes Announces Chief Selects

08 August 2018
Sixteen Surface Warfare Officer School Unit (SWOSU) Great Lakes first class petty officers were selected for promotion to chief petty officer according to a Navy message release August 8.

Sixteen Surface Warfare Officer School Unit (SWOSU) Great Lakes first class petty officers were selected for promotion to chief petty officer according to a Navy message release August 8.

"An outstanding achievement and career milestone to be selected chief petty officer,” said Cmdr. Terrance Patterson, commanding officer of SWOSU Great Lakes. “Much more will be expected of our new chief's as they continue to lead on shore duty and on their first at-sea assignment. Our warfighting navy has many leadership challenges ahead of it as we move into the future. Today's chief petty officer must be well read, exercise firm, fair and consistent leadership and be dedicated to a higher calling in service to our nation. The new chief must also clearly recognize that we have a new generation of Sailor entering our Navy, who's traditional values are possibly quite different than their own. As it has been for decades, It's the chief's job to mold, shape and nurture their subordinates, transforming them into outstanding and fearless leaders, unquestionable technical experts and true mariner professionals."

To sum up the responsibilities of a chief petty officer Patterson reflects on the words of a past Navy leader.

"Admiral Arleigh Burke stated it quite well,” Patterson said. "Navy leaders must know their jobs, they must be willing to work hard and accept responsibility; they must have a zest for their work if they are to radiate enthusiasm; they must insist on competent subordinates; they must put country and service above all personal friendships and aspirations. Navy leadership not only encompasses the foregoing attributes, it requires such vital additives as integrity, steadfastness, honesty, dedication, pride, loyalty, initiative, tact, understanding and courage."
