The Navy announced the non-profit organization Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) as this year’s recipient of the Spirit of Hope Award.
HAVA was nominated by Cmdr. Steven Macdonald, executive officer, Naval Sea Logistics Center (NSLC). NSLC is aligned under Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division, Keyport, which reports directly to NUWC Headquarters and to the Naval Sea Systems Command. Macdonald selected HAVA because of the organization’s dedication to raising awareness, increasing confidence, and assisting injured men and women returning from military missions by reconnecting them with outdoor activities.
“When you look at the 11-year history of HAVA providing support to our wounded and injured veterans, they fully embody the dedication and commitment that Mr. Hope exhibited over his 50 years of service to our troops,” said Macdonald. “They are a great group of caring and dedicated people.”
From 2008 to 2017, HAVA conducted 148 different shooting, hunting and outdoor events throughout the United States, serving over 8,200 Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces and their families.
"Honored American Veterans Afield started more than 10 years ago with a simple mission to help disabled veterans and wounded active duty military personnel in their healing process", said Tom Taylor, HAVA Chairman and Executive Director. "We are beyond humbled that this grass roots, volunteer organization, with a mission of using active outdoor sports as a means to help with rehabilitation, has been selected for such a prestigious award. It was never HAVA's intention to pursue great numbers or awards, but simply to serve those who sacrificed so much in service to our country. We are truly honored to be a recipient of the Spirit of Hope Award."
Representatives from HAVA will be presented with the Spirit of Hope Award in a ceremony at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes on Sep. 28.
The Spirit of Hope Award was established in 1997 based on the contributions made by entertainer Bob Hope to the military. The award is presented to individuals and organizations who exemplify the same qualities of generosity and patriotism Hope is renowned for.
