San Diego Fleet Week (SDFW) began to take shape as the amphibious transport dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) moored on Broadway Pier, Oct. 23.  

SDFW Fleet Week is a week-long event taking place from Oct. 22-28. The event provides an opportunity for the American public to meet their Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard teams and experience America’s sea services. During fleet week, service members participate in various community service events and showcase capabilities and equipment to the community.

This year, Harpers Ferry and the Hamilton-class Coast Guard cutter Mellon (WHEC 717) are featured on Broadway Pier and will be hosting public ship tours throughout the week. Service members will also be engaging in 19 volunteer events around San Diego that include Habitat for Humanity events, river clean-ups, helping at local food banks and feeding the homeless.

“I’m excited to be able to be downtown for a week and talk to and meet people that don’t normally interact with the military,” said Information Technician Moran Meyer, assigned to the Harpers Ferry. “This should be a great week and our ship is honored to be selected as the featured ship.”

SDFW is free to the public and includes many events such as the annual enlisted golf tournament, a military family tailgate and viewing party for the Navy versus Notre Dame college football game, an Innovation Zone, SDMAC breakfast and much more. One of the annual fleet week events is the Enlisted Recognition Luncheon hosted at Sea World. The event hosted 450 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen that serve in the San Diego area. SDFW president and retired Navy captain, Jack Ensch, thanked the men and women in attendance for their service and support.

 “Thank you for your honor, courage and commitment and protecting and defending all the principals that this nation is founded on,” said Ensch. “This year’s Fleet Week is filled with some exciting events and they would be impossible without the support from all of you.”

Prohibited items on board ships during public tours include the following:

- Weapons, including knives, firearms and club weapons

- Defensive chemicals or sprays, including mace and pepper spray; spray cans of any type

- Fireworks, flammable liquids or other explosives

- Illegal drugs and/or drug-related paraphernalia

- Large bags, including backpacks and large camera bags (small camera bags and small handbags may be permitted, but will be subject to search)
