CNO, MCPON Visit Naples Region Sailors

20 November 2018
CNO and MCPON visited U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet headquarters at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, Nov. 20, 2018.

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. John Richardson, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Russell Smith visited U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet headquarters at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, Nov. 20, 2018.

During the visit, CNO and MCPON met with senior leadership before holding an all-hands call for the Naples region Sailors and Navy civilians.

“This theater has become sort of the case study,” said Richardson. “The leading thinkers, the actors in terms of what our Navy is doing. Some of the most exciting stuff that we are doing.”

CNO went on and praised the Sailors for their implementation and execution of new defense strategies such as Defense Secretary James Mattis’ Dynamic Force Employment with the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in U.S. 6th Fleet.

“You guys are managing that,” said Richardson. “Defining and redefining the way that our Navy is going to operate going into the future as we reembrace this idea of great power competition. We talk about 6th Fleet operations all the time back in Washington.”

After delivering remarks CNO and MCPON opened the floor to questions from the Sailors and civilians addressing topics that ranged from career development to the employment of today’s Navy before wrapping up by thanking the Sailors and civilians in attendance.

“Thank you for everything you are doing,” said Richardson. “You are doing absolutely terrific work. Upholding and demonstrating everything that it takes to maintain this very fragile thing we call freedom. You guys are doing that each and every day.”

U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
