Rear Adm. Michelle Skubic, commander, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) joined Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and four survivors of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor for a commemoration at the Pennsylvania capitol building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dec. 7.
Addressing an audience of more than 150 military members and civilians, both Skubic and Wolf reflected on the heroic actions of the late President George H. W. Bush, who flew 58 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals.
Noting today’s unveiling of the first phase of the Doris Miller memorial in Waco, Texas, Skubic shared the story of Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris “Dorie” Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his courageous efforts during the attack.
“Our nation’s legacy, and the legacy of President Bush, Petty Officer Miller and the survivors with us today, is that our fighting spirit has remained unshakeable, as has our unceasing determination to defend the defenseless, and our resilience to rebuild where there is destruction,” Skubic said.
The program, sponsored by Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, takes place Dec. 7, each year at 12:55 p.m., the same time of the attack, at the Pennsylvania State Capitol East Rotunda.
“Thank you for taking the time to remember this infamous day in our nation’s history and the brave men and woman whose stories continue to inspire us every day,” Skubic added.
NAVSUP’s mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter. Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP oversees logistics programs in the areas of supply operations, conventional ordnance, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, and security assistance.
