Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) recorded the highest ratings improvement for a Department of the Navy (DoN) organization in the 2018 “Best Places to Work in the Federal Government” ratings released by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service Dec. 12.

With its 3.9% ratings improvement compared to 2017, the SPAWAR family of commands now ranks second of all DoN organizations participating in the ranking program.

The move also places SPAWAR in the top quarter (96 of 415) of the entire U.S. government in the ‘agency subcomponent’ category – a jump from 136 of 339 in 2017.

“Due to the nature of our mission, SPAWAR must compete with high-tech companies to attract and retain the highest quality workforce,” said SPAWAR Executive Director Pat Sullivan. “We strive to make SPAWAR the best place to work every day. We do our best to provide the right training, career development opportunities and environment, so our world class team can thrive and deliver exceptional support to our warfighters.”

The command’s dedication to work-life improvements were reflected in the “Best Place to Work” index scores derived from the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) annual Federal Employees Viewpoint Survey. SPAWAR received a 71.8 index score in 2018, and has steadily improved every year since attaining an index score of 57.1 in 2013.

Programs such as flexible work schedules, increased quality of work-life opportunities, expanded training opportunities and workplace infrastructure improvements commensurate with available resources have contributed to SPAWAR’s improved scores.

The 2018 Best Places to Work rankings include 488 federal organizations: 17 large federal agencies, 27 midsize agencies, 29 small agencies and 415 subcomponents. SPAWAR was included in the agency subcomponent category as a subcategory of DoN. (https://bestplacestowork.org/about/)

The OPM Federal Employees Viewpoint Survey was administered April through June 2018 to permanent executive branch employees and was completed by 598,003 federal workers across the federal government.  

SPAWAR’s survey results include the roll up of SPAWAR Headquarters; SPAWAR System Center Atlantic; SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific; Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS); and Program Executive Office, Command, Control, Computers, Communication and Intelligence (PEO C4I).

SPAWAR identifies, develops, delivers and sustains information warfighting capabilities supporting naval, joint, coalition and other national missions.
