Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes awarded its selections of Senior Civilian of the Year (SCOY) and Junior Civilian of the Year (JCOY) for 2017, Feb. 22.

Receiving plaques from TSC Commanding Office Capt. Mark Meskimen were SCOY Marcy Knudtson and JCOY Donald Brunin.

"Civilians are a very important part of my command," Meskimen said. "They are the backbone, not only for continuity of operations, but for keeping a steady and knowledgeable strain on accomplishing our mission."

TSC Information Technology Specialist Marcy Knudtson successfully led the replacement of 776 Navy Marine Corps Intranet workstations and managed more than 1,700 individual line items, valued at $287,894 for the command and five learning sites (LS). Her efforts resulted in a smooth transition and immediate operational readiness.

"I was very surprised and extremely honored being named Senior Civilian of the Year, especially knowing the top notch staff members I was up against," Knudtson said. "The support of my N6 Team and the staff from TSC and the other Great Lakes LSs - Center For Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Center for Surface Combat Systems, General Skills Training, Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School, and Surface Warfare Officers School - assisted in making my job easier and contributed in my accomplishments. I also feel I'm successful because I enjoy what I do."

Additionally, as a technical advisor, working directly with the Catharsis Sexual Assault Training Team, she provided Logistics for the Sexual Assault and Gender Specific training to more than 300 staff members and 12,072 students.

"I feel it is important to go beyond what is expected of me through my work," Knudtson said. "Being part of guiding student Sailors in becoming better people has always been a goal of mine. I'm very proud of the volunteer work I do with the Navy's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program and my community church. It is the icing on the cake to be recognized by the command for that work."

As equipment and facilities service assistant, Donald Brunin led a team of eight building maintenance assistants in the emergency clean-up of three flooding incidents in Building 3, and mobilized a 50-man working party which he supervised and directed, saving the Navy more than $25,000. He also managed more than 2,280 students, resulting in 13,716 man-hours of facility repairs and clean-up, ensuring minimal interruption of training and increasing quality of life for thousands of Sailors.

"I feel honored that the job I do every day throughout the day is recognized," Brunin said. "Coming to work with a positive attitude, no matter what may be thrown my way, I believe contributes to my success. It is my hope that the work I do makes a difference in the work environment of the staff and students in the command making everyone's job easier."

Brunin ensured the highest facility standards were maintained by identifying, and personally correcting 594 minor repairs saving the command $53,000. Additionally, he identified, prioritized and performed quality inspections for 179 facility discrepancies, and oversaw the completion of nine projects, totaling more than $204,000.

"These outstanding civilians that we are recognizing today are simply the best of the best, our top performing civilians," Meskimen said. "I am humbled and honored to publicly recognize their significant accomplishments throughout this last year; top of my command. Thank you for your dedication and service to not only this command, but this great nation."
