Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) celebrated African American History Month with an event hosted by the ship's multicultural committee, Feb. 25.

This year's theme is "African Americans in Time of War." It marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and honored the roles black Americans played in warfare. Senior Chief Information Systems Technician Butch Everett, from New Orleans, was the guest speaker for the event.

"African Americans have held, and still hold some of the highest ranks and offices in the U.S. military," said Everett. "We've elevated from our first military jobs as stewards to admirals and generals. That took years of sacrifice, dedication and hard work on the backs of our forefathers to get to where we are today."

Members of the multicultural committee gave a presentation highlighting the contributions African Americans in the military have made throughout our nation's history.

"It makes me proud to be able to stand here today, knowing the path that was paved for me to be here," said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Katerria Spears, from Marks, Mississippi. "We reflect and pay homage to those who came before us."

Cmdr. Leroy Mitchell, commanding officer of USS Benfold, concluded the ceremony with remarks to the crew.

"I know our strength is in our diversity," said Mitchell. "It's our teamwork that continues to save us. You guys continue to impress me. You continue to take care of one another, day in and day out. Thank you guys for doing that. That's what it's all about; coming together as a team and taking care of one another. "

African American History Month is held every year in February.

Benfold is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
