Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes hosted a regional record review event sponsored by the Great Lakes Area Petty Officers Association March 28.

The multi-session event brought together 35 master chief, senior chief and chief petty officers to assist 1st class petty officers from area commands putting together their packages for the advancement board.

"We want the candidates to know that we are rooting for them as they strive for success in their Navy career," said TSC Command Master Chief Randall Reid. "All of us have been through the process and know what is expected. Our goal today is to give advice that will help candidates navigate their way through the process."

A panel discussion and question and answer period was held before participants split into groups to have their records reviewed and suggestions were made to improve individual candidates submissions by senior enlisted.

"After attending this opportunity I have a better understanding of what the board is looking for," said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Jamie Scrubb, recruit division commander at Recruit Training Command. "I learned of the milestones I have to meet, how to put my advancement package together for submission."

Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class William Overton, instructor at Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit Great Lakes, found the event to be very helpful especially having the chance to receive advice from master chiefs who have had board experience.

"I would tell anyone who is about to send up their package to the advancement board to attend an event like this," Overton said. "You actually hear straight from those who have been through the process. It was valuable to hear from our individual communities; every community was represented here today giving us an excellent point of view of what each of needs to do to stand out."
