NAVSUP FLC Norfolk LSC Helps Prepare Harry S. Truman Battle Group for Deployment

When the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Battle Group got underway April 11 for a scheduled deployment, they had the comfort of knowing they were fully stocked and ready for whatever might come their way, thanks to the efforts of the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Norfolk Logistics Support Center (LSC).

The LSC is kind of like an "easy button" that ships can call upon whenever they need something. Need to track a part? Call the LSC. Need to have provisions delivered? Call the LSC. No matter what the ships might need, the LSC is there to make their lives easier.

LSC personnel began working with the HST Battle Group ships in January, helping them through the items that needed to be checked off prior to their deployment.

"We had nine LSC personnel engaged in preparation for this deployment," said LSC Deputy Director Barbara Robinson. "Possibly most challenging are critical parts that get delayed and/or lost in shipment. The logistics support representatives (LSRs) have to work to locate the part and simultaneously work with the ship to manage the 'panic level' that can arise if the part is one that would prevent the ship from getting underway on schedule."

Robinson added that the LSRs are active participants supporting the ships and their crew members during their pre-deployment exercises.

During the days leading up to the April 11 departure date, LSRs worked with the deploying ships and coordinated clean sweeps throughout the week and performed physical walk-throughs the last two days prior to departure to ensure the ships received all material needed for deployment.

The NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Subsistence Prime Vendor (SPV) Division processed 278 pallets of provisions for the HST Battle Group to be delivered throughout the week before departure date. LSRs also coordinated the return of ships' duty vehicles.

Ships leaving Norfolk for an extended deployment don't have to worry about the LSC's support ending when they push back from the pier. "The most satisfying part of our job is ensuring that we have supported our crew in such a way that they are able to leave with peace of mind in knowing that the ship is mission ready, and that we are here to support them whenever they need us, wherever they are," said Robinson.
