Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP) Vice Adm. Robert Burke delivered a call to action to Navy leaders to increase retention in a growing fleet in NAVADMIN 095/18, released April 16.

The message detailed key areas of focus for leaders at all levels to master, in order to foster an environment where Sailors and their families want to 'Stay Navy'.

The Navy is transitioning to a growing force, requiring increases in recruitment, and Sailor retention in a competitive labor market.

NAVADMIN 095/18 highlighted the six key command programs that form the foundation of Sailor retention: command sponsorship, command indoctrination, career development boards, mentorship, ombudsman programs and Sailor performance recognition.

Burke's message echoes the concepts outlined in retired Adm. John Harvey's original 'Brilliant on the Basics' message, which was released in February 2008 during Harvey's tenure as CNP.

The second part of Burke's message is scheduled to be released in the coming weeks and will focus on the concept of leadership engagement.
