Chief Warrant Officer 4 Veronica Hanna relieved Lt. Cmdr. Michael Laraya as the officer in charge (OIC) of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT) Det. Rota during a change of command ceremony, May 17.

Capt. Andrew Corey, commander, U.S. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Naples, Italy, presided over the event.

"Rota is an incredibly important operating base and a physical signal of the United States' friendship with the host country of Spain," said Corey. "Ensuring that Naval Station Rota remains ready and relevant as an operation platform and a combat force ready to be deployed, that's where NCTAMS LANT Det. Rota comes in. This base does not operate without exquisite communication and assured command and control."

While in charge, Laraya's team provided responsive, resilient and secure computer and telecommunications services enabling information superiority for Naval Station Rota, tenant commands and coalition forces.

"The NCTAMS team of Sailors and civilians should be incredibly proud of the foundation that you have built to assure command and control at Naval Station Rota," said Corey.

After receiving his end-of-tour award and many other farewell gifts from his team, Laraya spoke to them for the last time as their OIC.

"For my Sailors here at the detachment ... be good and do good things," he said. "It'll pay dividends for accomplishing the mission and building up each other as well. Also, have the personal integrity to do the right thing even when no one is looking."

Corey described how this NCTAMS change of command is different than many in the past because of the rank of the incoming OIC.

"This was a special detail to bring Warrant Officer Hanna here," Corey said. "The OIC here will remain a lieutenant commander position, but as the detail team looked around to see who was available to take over, they decided there was only one in the information professional community that had the experience, the leadership and the technical acumen to come in and take charge of this amazing facility ... and that was Warrant Officer Hanna. I have the highest confidence that you will take NCTAMS LANT Det. Rota to even greater heights."

"It's amazing to be here," said Hanna. "You made me feel like part of the family before I even got here. I'm going to do my absolute best to take care of this fantastic team."

Naval Station Rota enables and supports operations of U.S. and allied forces and provides quality services in support of the fleet, fighter and family for Commander, Navy Installations Command in Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA).

Just as a ship performs lines of operation that provide a capability, Navy Region EURAFSWA bases perform the same eight lines of operation to provide capability to the fleet, joint and allied forces. These eight lines of operation are air operations; port operations; safety; security; housing; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR); Fleet and Fleet and Family Services; and what is called the core: the fuels, water and power that keep the bases running. Through the lines of operation, installations are force multipliers that maximize combat capability of operational units.
