Capt. Ryan Heilman, commanding officer of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada (SSBN 733), interacted with members of the Minden Rotary Club, June 19, at Carson Valley Inn Casino.

Heilman's visit supported Reno/Carson City Navy Week by educating community members about how USS Nevada plays a role in the Navy's mission.

"The USS Nevada is a strategic deterrent platform," said Heilman during his talk with Minden Rotary Club members. "We are a two-crew submarine, which allows us to keep the submarine at sea about two-thirds of its operational cycle, which is pretty significant."

Rotary Club President Pat Bridges appreciated the Navy's presence at their meeting.

"We have a lot of veterans in our group," said Bridges. "We are really happy to see someone from the armed forces, especially the commanding officer of a submarine."

Reno is one of only 14 cities selected to host a Navy Week this year.

Reno Navy Week is scheduled from June 18-24, coincident with the Reno Rodeo, and is designed to give area residents an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity.
