Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer visited Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South August 23 to introduce himself and to tour Navy Personnel and Recruiting Commands.

Joining Spencer and his wife, Polly, for a portion of the tour were Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Stephen Giordano.

"Polly and I are happy to have a chance to come to Millington and meet with the organizations that are responsible for the 'street-to-fleet' manning of the Fleet, from recruiting to community management - to promotions and distribution. We understand that a lot happens on this base," said Spencer. "Polly has had a chance to see several other facilities so she is really looking forward to having time to really delve into how Naval Support Activity Mid-South provides the infrastructure for the tenant commands here."

Spencer began his visit with a windshield tour of the base before being briefed by Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert P. Burke and Commander, Navy Personnel Command (NPC) Rear Adm. Richard Brown about the Navy's manpower, personnel, training and education transformation efforts. He was also provided an overview of the Navy selection board process and he recognized the Navy Casualty personnel for the assistance they are providing to Navy families.

"My number one priority is people and that is why I am here today," said Spencer. "This is important work and you should be proud because what you do here every day ensures we are able to take care of Sailors."

Later in the day, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command (CNRC) Rear Adm. Pete Garvin provided a CNRC overview.

"This was a great opportunity to meet the new CNRC, Rear Admiral Garvin, and the great team at Navy Recruiting Command," said Spencer. "I was especially interested in the discussions about NRC's transformation. This is an exciting time in recruiting, and I look forward to seeing how it all evolves."
