The series of evolutions known as a composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) is complete for the crew of guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52).

Bunker Hill's crew completed multiple evolutions designed by Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG)15 that tested their skills in air defense, sea control, anti-submarine warfare, logistics evolutions and damage control.

"Our team met the challenges provided by CCSG 15 with a tremendous work ethic to include the effort they put into every single mission and the attitude they executed with," said Bunker Hill's commanding officer, Capt. Joe Cahill. "I'm proud of their hunger to learn and the results they delivered."

Multiple underway periods provided Bunker Hill and its crew an opportunity to refine their skills as an individual unit. COMPTUEX was the capstone training event which gave Bunker Hill the chance to integrate completely with the rest of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG).

"COMPTUEX is an excellent opportunity to operate in a dynamic, complex environment involving every aspect the U.S. military has to offer," said Lt. Lee Shewmake, Bunker Hill's operations officer. "It is the culmination point of a long road of basic phase requirements to get the ship ready at a unit level, then working together as a team in a strike group, testing the limits of resources, ships' weapons systems and ships' crews."

With the final workup phase complete, Bunker Hill and the rest of TRCSG are ready to deploy later this year.

The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group conducted its final pre-deployment evaluation to ensure safe and effective coordination within the strike group to achieve mission readiness and the ability to effectively execute the Navy's maritime strategy. Following the successful completion of COMPTUEX, the TRCSG will conduct worldwide operations in its upcoming deployment.

TRCSG is comprised of Carrier Strike Group 9 staff, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23 staff, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, and the DESRON 23 ships; the guided-missile destroyers USS Halsey (DDG 97), USS Higgins (DDG 76), USS Preble (DDG 88) and USS Sampson (DDG 102), as well as the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52).
