Naval Support Activity Washington (NSAW) partnered with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to host the 4th annual Washington Navy Yard (WNY) Remembrance Run/Walk, Sept. 15.

More than 900 service members, DoD civilians and others participated in a 5-kilometer run/1-mile walk on the WNY to remember those who died during the tragic events of Sept. 16, 2013.

"This day means a great deal to the Washington Navy Yard family," said Capt. Jeff Draeger, Naval Support Activity Washington commanding officer. "It speaks volumes to have so many people continue to come together to both remember and represent how we are moving forward, putting one foot in front of the other."

The annual event affords those who were present at the time of the tragedy and those who have come to work at the Navy Yard since an opportunity to bond in remembering the loss and courage of that tragic day.

"This is great," said L.t. j.g. Zach Christensen, a Sailor assigned to Public Works Washington. "I didn't know those people personally but I know they worked as part of the Navy and in doing so supported the warfighter and this country. That shouldn't be lost on any of us and we need to remember their sacrifices.

"I love exercising and there's no better way to remember someone than to shed some sweat and tears. It helps internalize the memory and it's a fun way to get together and honor those whose lives were lost."

Christensen remembers where he was at the time of the 2013 tragedy and said the incident helped inform his decision to join the Navy.

"I was just enlisting at the time. I was doing a collegiate program and this incident happened weeks before I had to sign my contract. I knew that if other people were serving and put their lives on the line, that was something I had to do as well," said Christensen.

Draeger also expressed appreciation for all the partners who helped NAVSEA and NSAW plan and support this year's remembrance run/walk.
