Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded a $1.95 million contract to replace a broken transformer on board Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan, September 21.

The project will remove and replace the transformer, protective relays and related equipment, some of which is more than 30 years old and has exceeded its rated lifecycle.

"This utility infrastructure project safeguards our electrical distribution capabilities and bridges the gap between current shortfalls and future Japan Facilities Improvement Program project execution," said Public Works Officer Lt. Cmdr. Michael Hightower. "Completion of this project will ensure we provide continuous and uninterrupted services that are vital to mission accomplishment aboard NAF Atsugi. This award is the culmination of a complete team effort that identified an elevated risk and took action to mitigate and remediate the issue. It's a great success story and example of the expertise, capability, and engagement of our outstanding Public Works Department Atsugi team."

The contract was awarded to Mitomo CO., LTD. Work is scheduled for completion in September 2018.
