Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a nearly $14.7 million task order Sept. 18 to CH2M Hill Constructors, Inc., of Englewood, Colorado, for stabilization and repairs to multiple buildings damaged due to Hurricane Harvey at Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, Texas.

NAVFAC Southeast dispatched a 17-person combined Contingency Engineering Response Team (CERT) to NAS Corpus Christi arriving on base Aug. 28 from NAS Jacksonville and Public Works Department Fort Worth out of NAS Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas. The team began damage assessments just after Harvey made landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast. The CERT evaluated the facilities on base for damage caused as Hurricane Harvey passed through the Corpus Christi area.

"NAVFAC CERTs deploy to assess hurricane or other storm damage to military installations and help these installations reconstitute and recover base operations," said NAVFAC Southeast Contingency Engineer Don Maconi. "During this process, the team provides documentation so that cost estimates can be provided for each facility on base that may have damage from the storm, they provide public works support, contract administration support, etc."

The Corpus Christi damage could be considered minor compared to the damage sustained in Houston and other Texas neighbors, but plenty of work remains including the removal of carpet, walls, windows and other unsalvageable items due to water penetration, clean-up of roofing materials and tarping of rooftops to mitigate further water intrusion.

The contract also calls for facility repairs including roof replacements, roof decking, and sealing roof penetrations. Repairs also include correction of architectural, structural, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, fire protection, electrical deficiencies and any other incidental related work found to be due to the hurricane.

Hurricane Harvey repairs at Corpus Christi are expected to be completed by September 2019.

"As work now begins to repair damage from Hurricane Harvey, we still have teams deployed in Key West assessing damage caused by Hurricane Irma and we are also prepared to assist as needed for damage caused by Hurricane Maria," stated Maconi.
