Naval Air Facility Atsugi to Further Strengthen Energy Security

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded a $7.6 million contract to overhaul two frequency converters on board Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi, Japan, September 28.

Two 25-year-old 50/60Hz motor-generator set frequency converters, which have become deteriorated, will be repaired.

"This project allows Public Works Department Atsugi to continue to meet power demand requirements for aircraft maintenance hangars, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Division (AIMD), and airfield support facilities," said Public Works Officer Lt. Cmdr. Michael Hightower. "It is another outstanding example of the essential role we play in maintaining the critical assets that support our operational forces in the Pacific."

The motor-generator set converts the 50Hz off-base power supply to the 60Hz power required by all of NAF Atsugi's airfield facilities. Without a 60Hz power source, sensitive aircraft maintenance and testing equipment would not function properly, thus diminishing the mission capability of AIMD and other tenant commands within the airfield area.

The contract was awarded to Nippi Kosan Co., Ltd. Work is scheduled for completion in May 2019

The award follows a $1.95 million contract awarded Sept. 21 to replace a broken transformer on board NAF Atsugi.
