NAS Corpus Christi Powertrain Facility Contract Awarded

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a more than $54.5 million contract, Sept. 29, to Hensel Phelps Construction Company of Austin, Texas for construction of a new powertrain facility and central energy plant at Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, Texas.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a more than $54.5 million contract, Sept. 29, to Hensel Phelps Construction Company of Austin, Texas for construction of a new powertrain facility and central energy plant at Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, Texas.

The new powertrain facility and central energy plant will house rotary wing aircraft component rebuild activities and infrastructure.

The primary facilities include aircraft component maintenance buildings with flexible manufacturing space to house component maintenance processes, administrative space, rest rooms, support space, and a central energy plant.

The central energy plant will house boilers and chillers that provide heating, cooling and industrial steam for the machinery at the facility. The powertrain facility will include special foundations; fire detection, alarm, and protection systems; mass notification systems; energy monitoring and control system connection; and building information systems. Sustainability and energy enhancement measures are also included.

The contract also contains six unexercised options, which if exercised would increase the cumulative contract value to more than $57 million. The options provide for 25 bridge cranes, compressed air piping and drops, additional electrical bus duct, additional bus duct sections with associated feeders and circuit breakers, additional communication distribution, additional communications outlets and cable tray, galvanized metal duct in lieu of the fabric duct, and the addition of one structural bay and building system at the east end.

Work is expected to be completed by March 2020.
