Chief Petty Officers (CPO) at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego gathered for Fleet CPO training, Nov. 16.

This exercise is a one-day seminar designed to energize CPO messes to become more effective leaders. Content focuses on CPO responsibilities, key Navy programs and leader development.

"The seminar touches on areas such as team building, unit cohesion and leadership as its primary focus points," said Chief Information Systems Technician Ramon Noriega, an IWTC San Diego instructor. "The training is delivered by command master chiefs (CMC) who are hand-selected to serve as facilitators and deliver the training across the fleet."

The Fleet CPO training curriculum is drawn from various sources including civilian leadership courses, TED talks and CMC courses. It places a heavy emphasis on leading junior personnel, and emphasizes in its mission statement, "Every encounter with a junior Sailor or junior officer is a teachable moment."

"The training helped focus the chiefs mess on how we need to instill in our junior Sailors the significance of serving in a profession of arms," said Senior Chief Intelligence Specialist Keith Wold. "It also served as a reminder of the great responsibility we hold to the Navy to be visible and involved leaders with our Sailors and commands."

With an eye to future leaders, this training is also available for first class petty officers.

"I particularly enjoyed the history and the breakdown of the Navy's direction for the future," said Chief Electronics Technician Vincent Costigan. "We discussed how to lead and motivate different generations and how to use multiple different leadership styles within our divisions and command."

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
