Sailors and their families attended a pre-deployment brief aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Dec. 5.

The brief informed families what to expect when their loved ones are at sea. It also reminds Sailors to set their dependents up for success in their absence.

"It's important for Sailors and their families to attend these pre-deployment briefs to ensure that they're prepared for deployment," said Capt. Brian T. Schrum, Carl Vinson's executive officer. "It's best to resolve or prevent any potential upcoming conflicts that may occur while we're at sea."

Families heard from organizations like Families Overcoming Under Stress (FOCUS), Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) and American Red Cross. They covered essential topics such as safety, legal, finance, medical and religion.

"Regardless if you've undergone previous deployments, it's important to develop a pre-deployment check-off list," said Jason Petty, a Fleet and Family Support Center representative. "Sailors should ensure that they have a spending plan, power of attorney, passport, wills, family care plan, communication plan and other must-need check-off items."

Carl Vinson will hold another pre-deployment brief at 5 p.m. Dec. 7.

The upcoming deployment will mark Carl Vinson's third deployment in four years.

Commissioned in 1982, Carl Vinson is America's third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The ship's primary mission is to conduct sustained combat air operations with an air wing complement of more than 60 aircraft.
