MIDPAC Visits USS John Finn

11 December 2017
Rear Adm. Brian P. Fort, Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, visited USS JOHN FINN (DDG 113) pierside at Naval Base San Diego, California on Nov. 30.
Rear Adm. Brian P. Fort, Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, paid a visit to the Officers and Sailors of USS John Finn (DDG 113), one of the Navy's newest and most advanced warships, on Thursday, Nov. 30.

He toured combat information center, and held roundtable forums and question and answer sessions with the ship's Wardroom and Chiefs Mess. He also participated in an all-hands call on the ship's fo'c'sle, and congratulated two Sailors for being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal.

In meeting with John Finn's Wardroom, Rear Adm. Fort held a dialogue about what it takes to be a successful leader, chief among them being integrity. He stated that the three parts of integrity are "Absolute honesty, trustworthiness and reliability in all aspects of your profession, the moral courage to accept responsibility for your actions, and placing loyalty in the Navy and nation ahead of loyalty to individuals."

Officers were charged with thinking about leaders in and out of the armed forces who demonstrate the critical components of integrity, and with striving to demonstrate these components themselves. While talking to the Chiefs Mess and the ship's complement, Rear Adm. Fort discussed some of the challenges and successes of our Navy in the past few months, with a look ahead to where the service is going in terms of equipment, ships, and personnel. He focused on how to improve as a Navy in light of recent events in the Pacific, and conveyed to John Finn's crew the need to focus on continual learning, improving, and adapting to changing world events and operational tempo.

Rear Adm. Fort assumed command of Naval Surface Group, Middle Pacific, and Navy Region Hawaii in August 2017. USS John Finn (DDG 113) is the Navy's 63rd Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, the first ship constructed as a dedicated Baseline 9 Aegis combatant. She was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, by Ingalls Shipbuilding of Huntington Ingalls Industries, and was commissioned in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on July 15, 2017. She is homeported in San Diego, California, under commander, Destroyer Squadron 31, and will primarily operate in the U.S. 3rd Fleet area of responsibility.
