Commander, Naval Legal Service Command, Rear Adm. John G. Hannink, announced Legalman 1st Class Kareshia Stallworth, assigned to USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), as a finalist for the Navy Legalman of the Year award on Dec. 4.

"We would like all of our Sailors to have the traits and abilities that she has displayed," said Chief Legalman Earl Brown, Truman's Legal department leading chief petty officer. "She has done an outstanding job, and I'm glad she was recognized. She is tireless and dedicated."

The award recognizes a Sailor serving within the legal community for outstanding achievement, duty performance, leadership, special accomplishments and overall contributions to command efficiency, morale and welfare.

"It's extremely humbling to have the opportunity to go to D.C. and represent the Truman," said Stallworth. "I'll be using my time until then to prepare for my board, but most importantly, I'm constantly working towards perfecting myself and effectively leading my Sailors."

Legalmen perform a variety of duties including preparing and processing legal documents in the areas of military justice; administrative, civil and operational law; and legal assistance while working under the supervision of attorneys and judges.

"All of her accomplishments on board [Truman] and all of the hard work she has done since she's been here have shown her worth," said Legalman 1st Class Decora Hawkins. "She's definitely a selfless and giving person. She will put others and the mission above her own priorities. I think she deserves it and has worked hard for it."

The final board competition will be held at the Office of the Judge Advocate General in Washington D.C. from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, 2018. Stallworth will be one of just three legalmen from across the fleet hand-selected to compete for the award.

On top of her duties as a legalman, Stallworth also holds various positions within the command to include president of Truman's Multicultural Heritage Committee, an assistant command fitness leader, a career counselor, a family care plan coordinator, safety petty officer and a repair locker team lead.

Truman is currently underway conducting carrier qualifications in preparation for future operations. For more news from USS Harry S. Truman, visit www.facebook.com/usstruman.
