Sailors from Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Monterey became the Navy's newest cryptologic technicians (interpretive) (CTI) during a graduation ceremony at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC), Dec. 14.

Students at DLIFLC study their assigned languages on an extremely compressed timeline in order to fulfill their roles as linguists. As linguists they will process foreign language information to support our national missions, both strategic and tactical, at sea and ashore.

The graduating Sailors were trained in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The MSA course at DLIFLC is 64 weeks and is considered one of the most difficult. Upon graduation and the reception of the appropriate security clearance, the graduates become full-fledged CTIs.

"I'm excited about using my newly acquired language expertise to defend this great nation and am excited for what my future holds," said Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Seaman Tyler Stearman.

DLIFLC teaches 17 foreign languages and has the ability to instruct another 65 foreign languages through its Washington D.C., branch. The Institute has graduated more than 230,000 students since its inception in 1941. The students share classrooms with service members from each of the military.

IWTC Monterey, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of foreign language training to Navy personnel, which prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
