Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Pacific's Environmental Business Line (EVBL) hosted an educational Earth Day event April 20 at its command headquarters.

"In honor of Earth Day, this spotlight event creates an opportunity to introduce others in the command to the environmental group," said Karen Sumida, NAVFAC Pacific Environmental business line manager. "We appreciate the opportunity to share with our professional workforce how we can help NAVFAC support the Navy mission while meeting our environmental obligations."

This year's Navy Earth Day theme is "Building Strength Through Stewardship," which is mission critical to environmental initiatives, creating trust with the public and regulatory agencies, preserving ecosystems in which we operate, and developing science to enable decision making future planning.

More than 50 employees attended the Earth Day event and enjoyed educational presentations from four environmental product areas - compliance, planning and conservation, restoration and resources and assessment.

Topics included the following: Environmental Management Systems; Drinking Water; Stormwater and Wastewater; Overseas Drinking Water Program; Section 7 Endangered Species Act; Section 106 National Historic Preservation Act; Air Quality; Ozone Depleting Substances; Radon; Solid Waste; Hazardous Waste; Asbestos; Department of the Army Permit; Environmental Liabilities; Environmental Restoration, Real Estate Support and Range Sustainment.

The event provided general insight to the Environmental leadership and staff, highlighted the various type of work each section executes and promoted awareness to the workforce on recognizing and understanding the critical challenges our environment faces.

"Learning about the EVBL through the presentation topics today was very beneficial for me," said Stacey Yamada, NAVFAC Pacific Public Works utilities management civil engineer. "I am now able to distinguish the various environmental sections and who to contact if I need assistance in those areas."
