Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes awarded its selections of Senior Civilian of the Quarter (SCOQ) and Junior Civilian of the Quarter (JCOQ) for the first quarter during a ceremony, April 27.

Julie McMahon and Chuck Hood were selected as SCOQ and JCOQ respectively, and received plaques from TSC Commanding Office Capt. Mark Meskimen.

"More than 40 percent of our workforce here at TSC consists of civilian employees," Meskimen said. "Recognizing top individuals as Civilian of the Quarter and Year provides those outstanding workers with the public recognition they deserve."

TSC Facilities Manager Julie McMahon effectively led 11 equipment facilities service assistants in the maintenance and upkeep of 23 buildings, totaling 1.6 million square-feet. Her outstanding efforts ensured minimal interruption of training, and the highest standards of the facilities department were maintained daily. As the primary liaison between TSC, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Midwest, and five learning sites, McMahon provided critical maintenance work orders, statements of work and reviewing plans, ensuring facility readiness for more than 10,800 students annually.

Additionally, she organized a rigorous zone inspection program, coordinating numerous personnel to inspect 23 buildings and 16 barracks for material condition and safety issues, which resulted in improved quality of life for staff and students.

"I am humbled knowing I was selected from a group of my peers," McMahon said. "This award wouldn't have been possible without the support of my entire facilities team and the leadership of my supervisor. I am very appreciative."

As lead training instructor for student command indoctrination division, Chuck Hood provided instruction and mentorship to more than 2,000 apprentice-level Sailors, while ensuring they were administratively and professionally prepared to complete the LifeSkills curriculum and execute their technical training for follow-on orders.

"I was totally surprised and humbled, but very appreciative of being honored as COQ," he said. "To me, I feel it was a team effort due in part to the first-rate individuals I work with on a daily basis. My goal is to ensure that I am providing correct and updated information to the newly reporting Sailors and answering questions that they may have, so that they can be better prepared to continue in their accession training."

Also, Hood stepped up during a personnel shortage to plan, coordinate, and execute the timely transfer of 143 Sailors to five separate commands.

"Our civilian workers are the backbone, not only for continuity of operations, but for keeping steady, knowledgeable and experienced employees aiding in the continual turnover of our active duty force," Meskimen said. "These individuals ensure the command keeps running in top shape during those transition periods."
