Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes awarded its selections of Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SSOQ), Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ), and Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ), for the 2nd quarter during a ceremony, April 27.

The SOQs include: Navy Military Training Instructor (NMTI) Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical) 1st Class Nancy Harrold, selected as senior; and NMTI Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Robert Buckley, selected as junior. NMTI Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical) 1st Class April Byun was named IOQ.

"All three of these Sailors take it to the next level in their daily work, and strive every day to be an example for the command," said TSC Mommand Master Chief Randy Reid. "The consistent leadership and mentoring they provide to our junior Sailors is critical to the development of our future leaders, and I am proud to have them on the TSC staff."

Staff Training Department Leading Petty Officer Harrold mentored and instructed more than 25 incoming staff members in regional policies and regulations. Her efforts directly enhanced fleet-readiness for the Navy's newest Sailors and ensured a smooth transition to the training environment of TSC. Additionally, she volunteered off-duty hours in support of Saturday Scholars, Bernie's Book Bank, Northern Illinois Food Bank, and Feed My Starving Children organizations. Harrold also coordinated the Annual Honor Flight Hockey Classic.

"I went up against some good competition amongst my peers," she said. "We all did our parts in preparing for the board and to come out hopeful. It is a great honor and privilege, through hard work and dedication, to be chosen as the Sailor of the Quarter."

While serving as NMTI for Barracks 831, Buckley was responsible for training and mentoring more than 350 students. His efforts contributed to students learning first-hand the meaning of teamwork, dedication to duty, and attention to detail.

Embodying "strength through training and discipline," he successfully instructed 106 hours of Naval Military Training to students and as a Sexual Awareness Prevention and Response Victim advocate, he provided crucial training to more than 200 Sailors in support of the Navy's fight to eliminate sexual assault from our ranks.

"I felt a little surprised but very honored, because everyone who I participated with has a ton of humility and are top performers at TSC," he said. "I have had to learn a lot of new things coming from Naval Special Warfare, if it wasn't for Fire Controlman 1st Class Brandon Page taking me under his wing and putting up with me I would be behind the curve. Being consistently hungry for more work, always doing something that's productive, and remaining teachable is what gets me where I'm going."

As Leading Petty Officer of Assist, Train and Inspect Division, Byun displayed exceptional leadership and dedication conducting 56 quality assurance inspections, enforcing command policies, while simultaneously training 115 staff members and improving quality of life for 4,500 students. Additionally, in her role as an Intervention Training Facilitator, she provided critical training to 90 Sailors in support of the Navy's fight against sexual assault.

"In my time at TSC I have developed significantly as an instructor with the help of my senior leadership and mentors," Byun said. "I hope to help guide and mentor future instructors. Our students are the future of the Navy. Passing on our knowledge through our experiences makes us all stronger. Also, relaying our personal and professional trials to the students helps them in making the right choices and persevering."
