Patrol Squadron 16 detaches to Iceland for ASW Training

Patrol Squadron (VP) 16 arrived in Keflavik, Iceland, April 28, 2017 in support of 6th fleet operations.

The "War Eagles" are taking the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance (MPRA) aircraft to Iceland to conduct advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations in the region and to further showcase the capabilities of the P-8A as an MPRA asset in the European area of operations.

"Training out of Keflavik is an excellent opportunity to hone our ASW skills in a northern environment. These types of detachments support our desire to improve our expeditionary capability within the U.S. 6th Fleet AOO (area of operations)." - Lt. j.g. Matthew Skoglund, Naval Flight Officer.


QUICK FACTS:
- This marks the first time that VP-16 has operated out of Keflavik, Iceland.
- VP-16 is the second P-8A squadron to deploy to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
- VP-16 is home ported out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.
- VP-16 is deployed to Commander, Task Force 67 out of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily.

- U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
