More than 400 participants attended Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) annual Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Dash of Color 5k run and 2 mile walk April 26.

This event is held in support of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and allows people to show their support in fighting sexual assault, spreading awareness and get a little exercise at the same time.

Amanda Hanner, NSGL Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), said the SAPR 5K Dash of Color is an opportunity for both the military and civilian communities at NSGL to come together for a fun event that highlights a serious problem.

"By doing a 5K that promotes fun, physical fitness, camaraderie, military pride, and healthy competition in conjunction with an event that gives information and resources throughout the course, we make it easy for sailors, their families, and civilians to become educated on a topic that most people wish to avoid."

Runners took one path and walkers another, but they all ended at the finish line where they were doused with teal-colored powder as they crossed. Hanner also said most people showed up to show support because it's a fun event.

"It's fun to get outside, do something good for your body and, in the meantime, support a mission that the Navy stresses heavily. It is a way to show support without having to commit to a collateral duty or to sit through an uncomfortable presentation."
