Sailors assigned to the Arleigh-burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) participated in a community service project with Guam's Islandwide Beautification Task Force (IBTF), April 29. Twenty-one Sailors participated in the IBTF's quarterly islandwide beautification day. As a part of their volunteer project, Sailors collected trash at the Governor Ricardo J. Bordallo Complex and a nearby beach, and kept a record of the different types of trash they gathered. "A [community service] event offers our Dewey Sailors an outstanding opportunity to engage with our friends in the Pacific," said Lt. Kevin Wilkinson, from Abbeline, Texas, and a chaplain assigned to Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31. "They aspire to give back to others and build stronger communities, and the people of Guam, along with their rich history and culture, hold a special place in the hearts of our Sailors. Sharing a joint effort with the volunteers from the lieutenant governor's office was particularly meaningful." Sailors had the opportunity to meet the lieutenant governor of Guam and receive information on the history behind the complex and the battle that took place there during World War II. "The Navy and all of our armed forces are very good at connecting with the community, and that's what makes our country great," said Ray Tenorio, lieutenant governor of Guam and native of Orlando. "Whether you're going to be here for an hour or for four years, we are hoping that the Navy continues to be a part of the community here in Guam, along with the rest of the country, because the things you've done here today make a difference." The Dewey deployed, March 31, as a part of the Sterett-Dewey Surface Action Group and will operate with regional naval services to conduct routine patrols, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation activities to enhance regional security and stability in the Western Pacific. It is the third deploying group operating under the command and control construct called 3rd Fleet Forward. The first iteration in recent history occurred in 2016 with the Pacific Surface Action Group deployment and was followed by the January 2017 deployment of the Carl Vinson Strike Group.
