The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville was awarded the 2016 Commander Naval Surface Forces (COMNAVSURFOR) Intelligence Excellence Award for surface ships with Independent Duty Intelligence Specialist (IDIS), March 27.

The Intelligence Excellence award recognizes excellence and outstanding achievement in Naval intelligence.

The intelligence team's hard work and dedication to their performance throughout 2016 compiling, collecting, and analyzing vital information for the Navy, led them to be selected as the number one choice.

Lt. Cmdr. John Rummel, Chancellorsville's executive officer said, "Our independent duty Intelligence Specialist and cryptologic team are some of the most professional and capable Sailors on the waterfront. Their attention to detail and ability to process a great amount of work make our ship stand out in the Fleet."

Chief Warrant Officer Ned Lentz, Chancellorsville's Cryptologic Warfare Officer oversaw the intelligence team on a daily basis and has never seen a more hardworking team.

Lentz said, "The Intelligence Excellence Award (IEA) is not an individual award but recognition to an entire team that compiled information for Intelligence Reports. These reports were typically submitted after a SNOOPIE Team event such as identifying a warship from a foreign country. Other intelligence information was submitted for supplementary reports that are used to depict interactions, movements and operations for a Strike Group or independently deployed units."

Chancellorsville's 2016 patrol was unique because the ship was the Air and Missile Defense Commander for the only forward-deployed naval forces strike group, Carrier Strike Group Five. Chancellorsville consistently demonstrated exceptional proficiency in Information Warfare throughout 7th Fleet. Chancellorsville spent time during patrol participating in joint and multi-national exercises and conducting complex operations throughout the South and East China Seas, Philippine Sea, and waters off the coast of the Korean Peninsula.

Chancellorsville's intelligence team is already hard at work preparing for the upcoming events throughout the 2017 patrol.

Chancellorsville is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and assigned to Carrier Strike Group Five supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
