Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) held a change of command ceremony in the ship's hangar bay May 15.

Capt. Ronald L. Ravelo was relieved by Capt. Putnam H. Browne as the commanding officer of Abraham Lincoln in a ceremony attended by several hundred distinguished visitors, guests and crew.

"It truly saddens me that my tour is coming to an end. This has been the most challenging tour of my nearly 30 year career. However, I can also say with certainty these officers, chiefs and young Sailors, are the finest I've ever worked with," said Ravelo.

Ravelo assumed command of Abraham Lincoln in August 2014 and successfully led the carrier through its refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding and redelivery to the Navy, May 12.

"For the last 33 months these Sailors have inspired me with their hard work, total dedication, and resilience," he said. "There was no challenge they were not able to overcome. For this, I'm forever grateful and will never forget them."

Browne was aboard Lincoln for the ship's five-day sea trials and witnessed first-hand the ship's capabilities and dedication of the crew. During his remarks he took the opportunity to charge the crew with the responsibility of maintaining their vigilance and dedication the USS Abraham Lincoln.

"I am thrilled to take command of this fine war ship as reenters the fleet," said Browne. "We don't know when we will be called to action, so we must press every day toward operational excellence."

Browne, a native of Piedmont, California graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990 with a degree in Systems Engineering s and was designated a naval aviator in 1993.

Browne's aviation tours include assignments with the "Rough Raiders" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, the "Blue Diamonds" of VFA-146, the "Mighty Shrikes" of VFA-94, and the "Blue Blasters" of VFA-34, where he served as executive officer and commanding officer, respectively.

Additionally, he served as the executive officer aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and as the commanding officer of USS Green Bay (LPD 20).
